Late night Soundz ::: Cults and John Maus

0
0

I’m overwhelmed by how much great music is being put forth this year. You can listen to the full album stream from the forthcoming S/T Cults album out on Tuesday, June 7th (buy here) below and catch them on tour. I can’t get enough of the new album from John Maus. The love letter to late 70’s, early 80’s new wave, art rock, synth-gaze , ____  (fill in the blank) is so beautifully depressing in a euphoric way that makes you yearn for those long rainy days that are perfect for staring out of that large living room window. “We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves,” is slated for release on June 28th and you can buy it here.

Unofficial John Maus video for “Cop Killer”

When I saw the tracklisting to John Maus’ sensational album, “We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves,” I thought that “Cop Killer” was the Body Count cover. Turns out it’s not, and would’ve probably fit right in the first “Robocop” when Peter Weller turns from human to cyborg. Check out the unofficial video by Lawrence Woolf for KnowPhase.com below.

2011 saw some greats come back to old form (the Strokes) and new faces, hello, John Maus. Just like every year, there’s those disappointments that don’t live up to the hype. I won’t be “Watching the Throne” nor will I be dancing to the new album from Justice. This is always the toughest part of the year trying to remember what you liked and not to leave any of the ones you liked off of the list. Let us toast to the year that was and what is to come.

We can all agree the devastated area of Japan has affected the world in one way or another. Blonde Redhead has taken it upon themselves to help in their own way by putting together the benefit album,”We Are the Works in Progress,” to be the first release on their new record label, Asa Wa Kuru (Japanese for “Morning Will Come”). The album has some generous contributions from Deerhunter, Four Tet, John Maus and Blonde Redhead to name a few. The album will be available for sale January 10 over here.

John Maus is touring again, coming to Denver

John Maus must be done with his school work, because the PhD musician is touring again with a Denver date on the dockett. In 2011, the Ribbon Music artist released what could have easily pass as the unofficial soundtrack for “Robocop” with gems like, “Cop Killer,” and ominous digital gems.

Six years have come and gone since the release of Maus’ third album, “We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves,” and not a hint of any new music. However, news that a tour must signal that new music is on the horizon or perhaps, imminent.

What’s curious is that from the string of tour dates as of now, Denver’s date is a in a supporting capacity from avante garde artiste, Ariel Pink. But maybe not so crazy considering the two were Cal Arts classmates at one time.

John Maus releases second single “Teenage Witch”

It’s good to have the lo-fi electronic odyssey that is known as the music of John Maus back in full effect. Six years have come and gone since the release of “We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves.”

As C=T reported earlier, Maus is scheduled to release his latest project, “Screen Memories,” October 27 via Ribbon Music. The time off from the spotlight allotted the mathematical whiz to expound on new material. Listen to the first single, “The Combine,” over here in case you missed it.

In related John Maus news, watch the Natasha Lyonne clip with Maya Rudolph singing “Quantum Leap” in full costume in the short, “Cabiria, Charity, Chastity.” Lyonne’s commissioned clip celebrates the KENZO Fall/Winter 2017 fashion collection that stars the likes of Lyonne, Fred Armisen, Greta Lee, James Ransone, Matt Lucas, Macaulay Culkin, Waris Ahluwalia and Leslie Odom Jr.

John Maus announces tour, US Date

John Maus delivered a lo-fi “Touchdown” pass with his last offering before the big release. Our favorite baritone voice is set to release his latest full-length album, “Screen Memories.” The same tried and true formula is what we’re hearing, but that’s okay.

In support of “Screen Memories,” look for Maus to hit the road early 2018 with an extensive tour jaunt that starts in Nebraska and ends in Chicago. Look for a Denver date at the spacious Marquis Theater in downtown. A weird internet hoax had Maus touring with Ariel Pink this month, however, it proved only to be on a few dates in California.

John Maus & Lukdlx ::: Marquis Theater ::: 01.19.18

After months of teasing Denver with a visit, baritone vocalist extraordinaire, John Maus, made his way to town for an unforgettable experience. A wave of teenage witches moshed to the dark synth melody of the Ph.D. of political theory. But not before bandmate’s Lukdlx’s inspiring set that captured the musical essence of “Black Mirror’s” “San Junipero” episode. The Minneapolis based act tied their performance together with a stage commanding take from their EP title track, “Bad Haircut.”

Maus is supporting his latest album with “Screen Memories.” This, of course, is much overdue since the release of the overwhelmingly crowd favorite project “We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves” with a six-year hiatus. It was nice to hear the vocals from the Ariel Pink bestie as decipherable as possible. My biggest gripe is the vocals on some of the recorded tracks play as inaudible. Whereas live, the towering artist feeds off of the crowd and does his best in a screamo type environment.

John Maus appears comfortable with the new material, nailing in stride on “Touchdown” (pun intended) and “Combine.” However, it was the older material that resonated for a large portion of the all-ages show that amplified a boisterous crowd with “Quantum Leap” and “Keep Pushing On.”

Catch the dark lords of synth on tour at tone of the dates below and look for a full length release later this year. It’s rumored that both Pink and Maus are to record an album as soon as their schedules permit.

After being relatively quiet for an extended period of time (since 2012), John Maus is ready to deliver his sixth album this spring. Maus is following up his 2017 release, “Screen Memories,” with “Addendum.” Fans can get a taste of the dreamy dystopian songwaves that the expert mathematician conjures with the latest single, “Episode,” below.
